“Defending The Caveman,” Rob Becker’s hilarious one-man comedy about love, sex and why guys leave their dirty clothes on the bedroom floor, returns to Manila for a limited run.

Since its debut in New York City in 1991, “Defending The Caveman” has enjoyed glowing reviews. “A comic phenomenon,” said the New York Times; “an outrageously funny and surprisingly sweet exploration of the gender gap,” raved the Chicago Sun-Times.

Reviews for the Philippine production have ranged from “engaging” and “hilarious,” to “insightful” and “a treat to watch.”

The local version of the piece had its start in late 2009, when theater producer Ria Pangilinan brought the show—still the longest-running one-man show in Broadway history—to Manila for the first time.

Joel Trinidad returns as “Caveman’s” solo performer, playing a married man struggling to grasp the lack of understanding between men and women.

This time, unlike the previous runs which included massive set pieces like a faux stone armchair, TV and refrigerator that wouldn’t be out of place in a Flintstones cartoon, the show is returning to its standup comedy roots. It will feature just an actor and a microphone.

“We wanted to challenge Joel a bit more this time,” says director Cathy Azanza-Dy. “He’s going to have almost nothing with him on stage.”

Trinidad says he is up to the challenge: “The show works just as well on a bare stage, because it’s all about the words.”

“Defending The Caveman” will run June 13, 14, 20 and 21 (8 p.m.) and June 15 and 22 (4 p.m.) at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, RCBC Plaza, Makati City. Call 2150788 or 0917-5378313; Ticketworld 8919999; or log on to ticketworld.com.ph.
