“What good is it for me to know my past life?”
My usual answer is, “If you have to ask that question, then knowing the past is not for you. You are not ready for such knowledge.”
But for some individuals, knowing what they did and who they were in the past has helped them better understand their present life.
Take, for example, the following letter I received from a recent participant in my “Soul mates, Karma and Reincarnation” (SKR) seminar in which I conduct two past life regressions for the entire class. Let’s call her Myrna.
“Dear Mr. Licauco,
“I’d like to thank you for the wonderful and enlightening seminar on SKR. I would like to share with you my experience during the second regression where I saw the past life of my 10-year-old son.
“My son and I have a relationship problem. I love my son very much, but I could not understand why I easily get so impatient and irritated with him if he does things incorrectly, and most especially when I tutor him for school. I thought for a while that maybe it’s because his animal sign is Monkey and I am a Tiger.
“When we had the second regression, where you brought us to five past lives, I saw us in three out of the five. First was when I saw myself as a young teenager of noble blood (I only assume this, as my clothing and hair was grand) in old European times. My son was my young personal server…
Monks
“The second life was when I saw my son as the owner of a farm and I was his worker. The last vision struck me the most, and I could feel my eyes tearing up. We were both monks in a very poor village. We were bald and both wore orange robes. This time I was the student. I saw myself sitting on dirty and damp earth with a small wooden table on my lap. My head was bowed down with my hands and forearms protecting my head. My son was the teacher or tutor and he held a long wooden stick, ready to whip me when I committed a mistake.
“The past lives for my son and I were a vicious cycle of authority and hurt. Now I understand our relationship, and I pray that despite our past lives, I will be able to forgive myself and forgive him, so I can cut the negative karmic cycle between us.
“I am looking forward to more seminars with you!
“Best regards, Myrna”
The aforementioned case shows how knowledge of the past can help heal a troubled relationship and remove any anger that we may feel toward people who may have hurt us. It is possible we have done something to them in the past, and we are merely getting back what we deserve. This is the inexorable Law of Karma or the Law of Universal Justice.
But knowledge of past lives does not only help us to clear karmic obligations. Such knowledge can even help us overcome certain psychological and physical ailments.
A woman who came to my class many years ago confessed to having a great fear of heights. If she looked out of the window from the second floor of a house, she would panic, sweat heavily and hyperventilate. Her fear of heights couldn’t be explained by any traumatic experience in this lifetime.
During a past life, through hypnotic regression, she saw herself living in the jungle of 17th-century Switzerland. She would travel from place to place by holding on to the long vines of trees.
One day, the vine she was holding broke and she saw herself plunge into the ravine. That was how she died. When she realized her current fear was caused by her memory of how she died in the past, she lost her fear of heights, because she no longer had to carry that memory.
Chest pains
A burly man who was having unexplained chest pains (all medical tests came out negative for heart ailment or any other possible cause) learned during regression that in 16th-century England he was a soldier. During a fierce battle, the enemy hurled an ax toward him and split his chest. That’s how he died. The pain he was experiencing disappeared after knowing the cause or origin of the pain.
However, not everybody who undergoes past life hypnotic regression could see their previous lives as clearly or vividly as the above examples. Sometimes one can see only flashes or glimpses of the past. Others may be aware only of what century they lived in the past, what their profession was. However one sees his or her past life, though, it is often very enlightening.
A hard-hitting journalist understood why he hated cats since he was a child. He even mercilessly killed a cat in his youth. He couldn’t explain why he hated cats and wanted to kill any that crossed his path.
He learned that during one lifetime in Africa he was killed by a tiger, which looks like a cat. He also discovered the reason he was proficient in shooting a gun with either left or right hand. He was a professional gunslinger or cowboy during a past life in the early wild west of America.
Is there no danger in undergoing hypnotic regression? In the hands of a competent and trained hypnotherapist, regression is a very safe and highly enlightening process.
