The new classic

We all think pearls are only to be worn by women who have reached a certain age or touchstone: stylish women who now prefer to dress nonchalantly but still up the ante with some quick accessorizing; those who have given birth or are marking a wedding anniversary milestone (in which pearls are a traditional present); or young ladies much like Grace Kelly, Kate Middleton and Carla Bruni who have found themselves at the right hand of kings and princes.

But pearl studs have adorned women, regardless of age, for centuries. The subject in the famous artwork, “Girl with a Pearl Earring” by Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer, wears it large and dangled, with a stillness that earned the painting the title “Mona Lisa of the North.” She was reportedly the eldest daughter of the artist, at around 12 or 13 years old at the time of its creation. The accessory grew to be the focal point of that piece, so much so that the original title, “Girl with a Turban,” was replaced.

At this year’s Golden Globes, actress Emma Watson wore pearls with a twist: golden and large, but on only one ear. A chunk of the young stylish cohort followed in her footsteps and are now using different ways to wear pearl: multiple pieces in shrinking sizes to cover some five or six piercings, or on the helix like a refined rock chick.

Jewelmer Joaillerie encourages women to invest in a timeless pair of its pearl-stud earrings through its Perfect Match, Perfect Pearls promotion. Whenever you buy a pair of pearl-stud earrings at any of its 13 boutiques nationwide until Sept. 30, you will receive a special 20-percent rebate on your next purchase at Jewelmer Joaillerie.

I love their Les Classiquies collection of black, white and gold pearl-stud earrings that range from 10-14 millimeters in size. There is no rule to wearing pearl-stud earrings other than according to the wearer’s fancy. They complement a crisp white shirt and jeans, a sharp business ensemble or a simple, little black dress.
