There have been attempts to update a successful product by keeping the foundation and creating something new out of it. Many times, a new creation is born, while other times it ends up sounding better than it actually tastes.
Examples of successful products are frozen food for the gods, queso de bola cheesecake, frozen brazo de mercedes, and a handful of brownie-based desserts in foreign-themed restaurants. Examples are Molten Chocolate Cake at Chilis, Brownie Obsession at TGIFridays, and Chocolate Thunder from Down Under at Outback.
These are desserts that ruin my diet. I find them very hard to resist as I’m a chocoholic.
Brownies have come a long way. If adobo is the national dish, brownies, to me, are the cornerstone of any chocoholic. In a dessert spread, it is the first one I will attack and whose quality I will analyze. Some even lace it with weed.
Even Europeans have come up with desserts with a brownie base. A flourless chocolate cake is similar in taste to it, and a molten chocolate cake was also created out of a brownie.
At a bazaar at Rockwell, I bumped into an old friend and a former eating buddy. Given her stature, she was once seen humming in front of the UP gym, feasting on fish balls.
She pulled me aside and told me to try the creative ice cream of her daughter-in-law, and a new dessert by her son’s friend.
At the bazaar, I was drawn to the chunks of moist goodies that looked like brownies. There were a variety of tiny samples. In situations like these, I play it safe and stick to the original flavor. That tiny bite lit up inside me. It made me think of my family. That, to me, is a sign of how good tasting something is. You want your family to experience your joy in that bite.
I took home a well-packaged box of this goodie. The container looks like a large pencil box with a wooden knife. Inside is every chocoholic’s dream. It looks like a pound cake but is all chocolate. It is a must-try.
At home I took a slice, closed my eyes and enjoyed each bite. It was moist and had a rich, bittersweet chocolate taste. I’m sure it’s very fattening but is not too sweet. I don’t mind breaking a diet for this.
My imagination was running wild on what else could be added to this. I was looking for ice cream to top it with. My kids went crazy over it. It didn’t last very long.
When chilled, it gets a bit hard but when you pop it in the microwave for a few seconds, voila! To this day, I still think about it.
“Bucky’s Not a Brownie” is the name of the product. Creator is Miguel Vargas who used to be called Bucky as a 9-year-old. This recipe has been with him as a child and he just kept on improving on it until its peak today.
His favorite variant among the spread is Chunky Blonde. One that looked interesting was Grumpy made with chocolate and Chocnut. Yum! But to me, the original is what I recommend.
