Natural remedies for recurring colds, migraine, constipation

Q: I am a health buff. What beverages would you recommend as part of my daily regimen?

Water—lots of it every hour, on the hour. Freshly squeezed juices or vegetables. If you must take anything canned, read the labels well. Avoid sugars, sweeteners, corn syrup, aspartame and preservatives.

Make it a habit to have fresh ginger tea or organic green tea. Be wary of products that say all-natural. Don’t just read the front label, go through the whole list of ingredients at the back of the product. Also, the best advice I can give you is to invest in a good juicer that can squeeze out all the natural juice from fruits and vegetables.

Vegi Cleanse

2 stalks celery

1 green apple

6-10 pieces chopped pineapples

1 clove garlic

¼ tsp raw wild honey

Q: Why am I perennially sick? If it’s not a cold that keeps recurring, it’s migraine or exhaustion.

There is never any one cure, because there are so many causes. Have a heart-to-heart talk with your doctor. Try to explore the cause of your ailments openly. There is always an underlying reason for any disease. And if you don’t treat the cause, you will always have the same disease over and over again. The cure isn’t a pill to mask the pain. Look into your lifestyle and make serious changes to improve your health.

Take the case of a call-center manager. She adopted the bad habits of her colleagues— drinking 10 cups of coffee nightly, using ephedrine-laced beverages to stay awake, eating junk food. The result? High blood sugar, elevated cholesterol, weight gain. In three months, she was admitted to the hospital due to liver and kidney infection.

She then reduced coffee intake to two cups, had zero stimulant beverages, ate regular meals with vegetables, did light exercise three times weekly. In four weeks, she lost 10 lb and had reserve energy for work.

Q: What is the gold standard for proper elimination? I have recurring constipation.

Sometimes, just by drinking glasses of water in one sitting, you can already feel the urge to unload. But latest studies say if you are not having 2-3 bowel movements daily, then you are constipated. Hard to believe, right? But it’s said that the human body was designed to have 2-3 bowel movements every day.

Constipation leads to allergies, depression, stress, gas, obesity, arthritis, insomnia, acid reflex, bad breath, etc.

Natural remedies include:

Prune juice, prunes (take twice a day)

Aloe vera juice or gel. You can eat it straight from the pot. Wash and peel and eat a small slice of the gel after meals.

Castor oil. You can get them in capsule form if the taste is too strong for you.

Flaxseed oil/capsules, once or twice daily

Dr. Tam’s cleansing tonic—a combination of herbs and senna whose effect is an instant cleanse (tel. 4011608, 0917-8307511)

Walk 20-30 minutes daily.

Take high-fiber cereals and bread.

Add psylium husks to your cereal or juice.

Q: Every time I dine on shellfish, especially lobster, I break out into rashes followed by a vomiting spell. What’s happening to me?

The first thing you must do is to rush to your physician. You are allergic to shellfish. It’s as simple as that. Each time you consume crabs, clams, oysters—anything with a shell—your body goes into a violent reaction.

Listen to your body. To better understand why this happens, remember that shellfish or crustaceans have neither scales nor fins. Generally speaking, animals of the sea, rivers and lakes with no scales or fins do not have a sophisticated digestive system that prevents the absorption of toxins from these bodies of water. All these sea animals swim in their own body excretions. Fish with scales generally have digestive systems that don’t allow poisons from the water to be absorbed.

The lobster, for example, is an anthropod—sometimes called the cockroach of the sea. While crustaceans like it may taste delicious, observe how your body reacts every time you eat them. You may find yourself feeling much better by avoiding them. As a future health guideline—go for fish with scales.
