Stories of survival, hope after ‘Yolanda’ featured in new book

The Foundation for the Philippine Environment

MANILA, Philippines — The Foundation for the Philippine Environment (FPE) is launching its latest publication, “Sights and Sounds of the Surge: Stories from the Coast as Told by Yolanda Survivors,” on November 25, 2014.

Through the eyes of residents of Eastern Samar and Leyte, the main heroes of this book, we see a glimpse of the incoming devastation that was Super Typhoon Yolanda. Read as the survivors narrate what they saw and heard that fateful night and that fearful morning that the storm decided to surge towards the coastal areas of these provinces in the Visayas. Feel what the survivors felt and how it was like to be in their shoes when the tragedy happened and how they are now coping and rebuilding their lives, by reading this book.

In recounting their experiences, the survivors share with the readers wisdom of hindsight on how to be better prepared and survive when the environment grumbles and when another Yolanda strikes.

The book, part of FPE’s Post-Yolanda Ecological Rehabilitation project, pays homage to the indefatigable spirit of those who lived through the ravages of Yolanda and, more so, through the travails of recovery and rehabilitation in its wake.

“FPE had made significant ecological investment in the coastal management of Guiuan. Yolanda also destroyed years’ worth of work in conservation efforts,” laments FPE Chair Liza Osorio. She adds that for a year now, FPE has been heeding the call to help the devastated coastal area and its communities to recover and rehabilitate.

Apart from the compelling stories of survival and human resilience, the publication also sheds light on the development of a localized climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction and management (CCA/DDRM) strategy in Guiuan that integrates ecological rehabilitation efforts and community resilience.

“Sights and Sounds of the Surge: Stories from the Coast as Told by Yolanda Survivors” will be launched on November 25, 2014,Tuesday, 2:00PM at the Astoria Plaza Events Place in Pasig City. advt
