The soothing winds of love artist Anna de Leon attempts to capture in her sixth solo show, “Tender Winds,” is opening Dec. 10 at Galerie Francesca in Megamall.
With a degree in interior designer from the University of Santo Tomas, Anna de Leon is a member of the Saturday Group. She has formed many recurring aesthetic motifs such as eggs, for instance, a symbol for coupling and love—and a binding element of a string that brings them together.
The painting “Second Chances” is a wonderful example of De Leon’s ability to combine technique with concept. We have her familiar motif of two eggs, bound together by a metal band that depicts a string. However, the context is that of a game—of tic-tac-toe—and the reason for the choice is to depict two x’s representing past lovers. It’s a thoughtful composition that benefits from De Leon’s own experimentation in technique. The eggs have been rendered in a clay-like paper that lends additional texture to the work.
“Wait Awhile” uses De Leon’s bird motif. The string is also attached to a feather, which the artist also collects. The feather symbolizes lightness of being—a feeling that De Leon evokes with her works. A brilliant rendition, the painting demonstrates the artist’s fine technical ability and grasp of concept.
