Examples of psychic power are found in the Bible

The Christian world considers the Bible to be the holiest and greatest book ever written. And for many good reasons. And yet, no two Christian Churches or sects will agree on a single interpretation of its contents.

That’s why there are probably hundreds of thousands of different Christian sects all over the world, all of which claim that their teachings are based on the Bible—and each also claiming to possess the only true and correct interpretation of its teachings.

That’s why during the 1st Vatican Council in 1869, the Roman Catholic Church declared itself to be the only one authorized to interpret the Biblical teachings with infallibility.

Because Biblical language is subject to so many different and even contradictory interpretations, no one has a right to impose his interpretation on another. It is in this light that I present my personal views on some extraordinary stories in the Bible, both the Old and New Testaments, which are considered miracles.

As I read the Bible not from a religious standpoint, but for its possible logical meaning, I began to see these passages in a different light. But I don’t expect everybody to agree with me.

To me, there is no such thing as a miracle, defined as something that defies or goes against natural law. As I see it, a miracle does not happen contrary to nature, but only contrary to what we presently know about nature (or the natural laws).

If we look at “miracles” not merely from the point of view of accepted physical laws but from higher dimensions of reality, then they cease to be miracles. Instead, they can logically be considered as natural events and occur in obedience to natural laws, which may not yet be known to man.

Unrecognized powers

In this series of articles, I shall explain so-called miraculous events in the Bible not as supernatural phenomena, but as the use of largely unknown or unrecognized powers of the human mind. They can create awesome phenomena, yes, but they do not occur contrary to natural laws.

I shall first define the particular psychic ability or power in question and then point out where such power or ability can be found in the Bible.

  1. Channelling or communicating with the dead

This refers to the ability or power to summon spirits of the dead or receive verifiable messages from them. Individuals who possess such ability are called, in our modern language, “mediums” or “channels of the spirit.”

Spirit communication is illustrated in a very clear and detailed manner in Book 1 of Samuel (28:3-25), which told the story of how King Saul. Disguised as an ordinary man, he consulted a female medium in Endor to summon the spirit of the prophet Samuel, because the mighty army of the Philistines was poised to attack his camp and he could get no answer from God, from his dreams or the prophets. The complete story is better told in the words of the Bible itself.

So Saul disguised himself and went, accompanied by two men, and they came to the woman by night. And he said, “Divine for me by a spirit and bring up for me whomever I shall name to you.” The woman said to him, “Surely you know what Saul has done, how he has cut off the mediums and the necromancers from the land. Why then are you laying a trap for my life to bring about my death?”

But Saul swore to her by the Lord, “As the Lord lives, no punishment shall come upon you for this thing.” Then the woman said, “Whom shall I bring up for you?” He said, “Bring up Samuel for me.” When the woman saw Samuel, she cried out with a loud voice. And the woman said to Saul, “Why have you deceived me? You are Saul.”

The king said to her, “Do not be afraid. What do you see?” And the woman said to Saul, “I see a god coming up out of the earth.” He said to her, “What is his appearance?” And she said, “An old man is coming up, and he is wrapped in a robe.” And Saul knew that it was Samuel, and he bowed with his face to the ground and paid homage.

Then Samuel said to Saul, “Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?” Saul answered, “I am in great distress, for the Philistines are warring against me, and God has turned away from me and answers me no more, either by prophets or by dreams. Therefore I have summoned you to tell me what I shall do.”

And Samuel said, “Why then do you ask me, since the Lord has turned from you and become your enemy? The Lord has done to you as he spoke by me, for the Lord has torn the kingdom out of your hand and given it to your neighbor, David.

Then Saul fell at once on the ground, filled with fear because of the words of Samuel. And there was no strength in him, for he had eaten nothing all day and all night. (From New Revised Standard Catholic Edition of the Bible)

Mental power

  1. Telekinesis

Telekinesis (or psychokinesis) is the mental ability to move, affect or influence an object without physical force but using mental power alone. An example of it can be found in the Bible.

Former Israeli paratrooper Uri Geller, popularized telekinesis with his dramatic and well-publicized demonstrations of bending spoons, keys and rings using mainly his mental power. He was also known to be able to fix broken watches by simply commanding them to work. In Dusseldorf, Germany in 1994, I witnessed Uri Geller germinate a radish seed out of his hand without moving his hand and simply commanding the seeds to grow, and inviting the rest of the audience (around 1,000 people) to do the same.

The following is a very good and clear example of telekinesis that can be found in 2 Kings (6:4-7) of the Bible:

The prophet Elisha and his community were told to cut logs to build more houses because of the growing population.

So the men went to the river Jordan for this purpose. As one of them was cutting the tree, his axe head fell into the river.

And he cried out, “Alas, Master! It was borrowed.”

Elisha then said: “Where did it fall?” When he showed him the place, he (Elisha) cut off a stick, and threw it in there, and made the iron float.

He said, “Pick it up!” So he reached out his hand and took it.

Telekinesis then has biblical proof.
