MANILA, Philippines—Veteran multi-platform actor Bernardo Bernardo has been hospitalized on Thursday night, his friend and publicist said Thursday.

Bernardo is doing the title role of “Haring Lear,” a Filipino adaptation of William Shakespeare’s “King Lear,” which is on its second and supposedly final weekend run this coming Friday to Sunday.

In her recent Facebook status, marketing officer Cherry Bong Edralin said: “Haring Lear” performances at the SDA Theater for March 6 to 8 have been cancelled!!! Bernardo Bernardo is currently confined at the St. Luke’s Global City. For ticket refunds pls contact 0917-750-0107. Thank you for your understanding.

SDA stands for School of Design and Arts of the De La Salle University-College of Benilde in Manila.

There was no mention what type of illness Bernardo has.

Edralin couldn’t be reached for further comment as of posting.

In “Haring Lear’s” preview night, a medical doctor in the audience (who requested her name not to be mentioned for privacy reasons) noticed the hoarseness in Bernardo’s voice, which she described as someone coming from a sick person.

Bernardo has been based in the US for more than 10 years. When he returned to the country last year, he established the Manila arm of the US-based Studio Connections International, a production outfit in which he also functions as president and artistic director.

“Haring Lear” is an original production of the Philippine Educational Theater Association (Peta), translated and adapted to Filipino by National Artist for Literature Bienvenido Lumbera and directed by Nonon Padilla.
