He’s still the epitome of the Filipino husband many women want to have—wholesome, charming, dashing and a family man.
That’s Richard Yap, “Sir Chief” to the millions who followed the highly successful morning TV series, “Be Careful with My Heart,” which recently ended its two-year run.
The 47-year-old Yap doesn’t look his age. In private he’s content running his business ventures and enjoying a happy family life, but the hot TV leading man is again gearing up to face the cameras for a new teleserye.
The storyline, Yap pointed out, has been written, “but the cast is not yet complete, so I can’t say much about it yet.”
But what’s clear is that consumer brands want a piece of him. Avon has signed Yap to endorse its latest scent RY.
“It’s an absolute honor to be noticed by such a well-loved and iconic brand as Avon,” he said. “I would like to thank Avon for giving me the chance to represent the brand. It’s a point of pride to be part of the Avon family and to have a fragrance that sports my initials.”
Backstage Pass gets personal with Yap as he talks about his style, grooming habits and show-biz life.
Entering show biz in my 40s is… something I never expected and never really prepared for. I’m not the type of guy who likes publicity. In fact, I never liked my pictures taken when I was younger, so I really had to go out of my comfort zone.
What I enjoy most about acting is… playing the part of someone else.
The hardest part of fame is… handling the crowd. There was one incident in a mall show where we didn’t have much security, I had to pass through the crowd and people were pulling me, pinching me. It was total chaos.
The most extreme thing a fan did for me is… have my name tattooed on her forearm. It read “Richard Yap as ‘Papa Chen’” (as fans of “Be Careful” call him).
I started doing commercials… back in the 1990s, but those were bit parts. My first major one was in 1999 for PLDT. I was then working in the corporate sector. An office mate who was doing commercials for extra income suggested I do the same.
I prefer to do… movies more than TV because I feel the shoot schedule is lighter.
Keeping it simple
My everyday staples are… jeans, polo shirt, T-shirt, loafers or casual shoes.
Sports I like to do are… golf and taekwondo, but I’m probably better at taekwondo because my golf is on and off.
A few of my favorite products from Avon are… The RY perfume, of course, and the Avon Eye Cream. Whenever I leave the house, I make sure that I have the fragrance on to smell fresh all the time.
In my bathroom counter, you’ll find products like… my clear facial soap from my dermatologist and my toothbrush. I’m a pretty low-maintenance guy.
I am most particular about my… hair. I use a lot of shampoo (brands) at one time and don’t just stick to one. I use Neutrogena, Head & Shoulders, and Palmolive. I also use Bench hair gel.
My daily regimen before I go to sleep is… to wash my face with facial foam to remove the makeup, if I’m coming from a taping. Then I use the clear soap. My wife used to give me products to use, but now I’m starting to use those that are really for men.
Pampering his wife
Yap makes it a point to pamper his wife whether or not there’s a special occasion.
