Art, fashion and technology meld in mobile phone launch

Expect elements of polished glass, precious metals and sleek fabrics when the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 edge are launched in a fashion event at Mega Fashion Hall April 17.

Specially made designs by members of the Fashion & Design Council of the Philippines (FDCP) and glass sculptures by Ramon Orlina will be showcased at S Carpet: Art & Fashion.

A phone casing by jeweler Marilou Co encrusted with 60 diamonds—to go with the S6 theme—will be on display.

This is not the first time that mobile phone technology and local fashion have partnered. FDCP president Anthony “Tonichi” Nocom recalled that it was

Inquirer Lifestyle editor Thelma Sioson San Juan who first broached the idea in the 1990s.

“Thelma really started it when she suggested that Samsung work with FDCP. At the time, she was the general manager and editor in chief of ABS-CBN’s Metro Magazine; the collaboration was called Samsung Metrowear and Metro Weddings. This partnership lasted years, but then other mobile brands gained prominence. In a way, working with Samsung for S Carpet is our ‘renewal of vows,’” Nocom said.

Digs Dimagiba, Samsung Philippines’ business unit head, agreed. He mentioned twice how pleased he was to meet with lifestyle reporters because he was able to talk about the phones’ aesthetic features and not just about their specs.

“Samsung is not just about technology,” he said. “Our products are designed to inspire people to create beautiful things, which is what Orlina, Co and members of the FDCP have done.”

He described the phones made of glass and aluminum as “conversation starters” because even if the owner placed his unit face down on the table, his seatmates would be bound to notice it.

“It’s that easily recognizable,” Dimagiba said.

One special feature that bears mentioning is that users can assign specific colors to the numbers they often contact. When they’re in a meeting or at work, they will immediately know who is calling since the assigned color will light up. They can then lightly place their finger over a scanner in the back that will send a previously saved message to the caller.

Phone owners who bewail the short battery life of their units might appreciate the extended battery life and ultrafast charging of Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 edge.

“Just 10 minutes of charging can power a two-hour-long movie,” Dimagiba said.

Both units have a 64-bit Octa-Core Processor, making them faster (0.7 seconds) than any other smartphone in the market today. They also have clearer cameras (16 MP + 5 MP with F1.9 lens and OIS) and superior Quad HD displays (577 ppi). The units come in blue topaz, white pearl, green emerald, gold platinum and black sapphire.
