Formed in the UK in 2008 after Joe Newman (guitar/vocals), Gus Unger-Hamilton (keyboards), Thom Green (drums) and former member Gwil Sainsbury (guitarist/bassist) met at Leeds University, in 2012, alt-J established themselves as one of music’s most intriguing new acts. Their debut album ‘An Awesome Wave’ won the 2012 British Mercury Prize. Featuring alt-J’s unique blend of electronic, folk and indie rock, held together by sharp songwriting, complex yet catchy melodies and enigmatic lyrics, the album was named BBC Radio 6’s Album of the Year. It also won an Ivor Novello ‘Album Award’ for songwriting and received three BRIT award nominations. The album has now gone platinum in the UK and sold over 1,000,000 units worldwide.
After the departure of Sainsbury in 2014, alt-J continued on as a 3-piece and recorded their sophomore album ‘This Is All Yours’ which debuted at #1 on the UK album charts and was recently nominated for Best Alternative Music Album at the Grammy Awards.
