Visiting Japanese professor to conduct Ikenobo Ikebana workshops

Professor Kiyotaka Kobayashi from the Ikenobo Ikebana Society of Floral Art, Kyoto, Japan, will conduct a seminar-workshop on the latest trends for the members of the Ikenobo Ikebana Society of Manila on June 27-29 at the Design Center Philippines. The public is invited to a free demonstration in cooperation with the Japanese Embassy at 2 p.m. on June 30 at the Glorietta Activity Center.

The ceremonial opening of the exhibits will follow at 4:30 p.m. with the striking of the gong for good luck by the following: Piedad Reina Roman of Davao, Teresa Celdran of Cagayan de Oro, Dr. Lupe M. Lazaro, club president of Manila chapter, overall exhibit chair Dr. Romeo Balderrama Jr., Kobayashi, Glorietta representative Mitch Dumlao, NCCA Chair professor Felipe M. de Leon Jr. and the wife of the Japanese Ambassador Madam Yuko Ishikawa.

The exhibit, which is open to the public, will be open until July 5 with daily lecture-demonstrations at 3 p.m. The schedule of demonstrations opens on July 1 with professors Serapion Metilla and Lupe Lazaro; professor Tess Calunsod, Aida Villanueva and Nina Ramos on July 2; Tin Abalos, professor Liling Nuguid and Tess Baldonado on July 3; professor Joyce Kato, Mila Robles and Missy Ignacio on July 4; and Dr. Jun Balderrama Jr., Metilla and Dr. Norie Balderrama on July 5.
Born in 1955, Kobayashi started the study of Ikebana in 1970.

He has graduated special advance courses in Meiji Rikka, Jiyuka (freestyle), Shoka, Modern Rikka, Rikka Shimputai. He has been to various countries to conduct seminar workshops for Ikenobo students in different parts of the US, Taiwan and Madrid.

Two years ago, he participated in events held in Boston celebrating Ikenobo Ikebana’s 550th Year and the 45th anniversary of the Ikenobo Ikebana Society of America.
