Lucy Torres-Gomez isn’t done conquering this part of the world. After modeling, acting, hosting dance competitions on TV, and assuming public office, she has now become what her grandma Carmen Martinez used to be: a self-confessed jewelry collector-turned-jeweler.
“Even in her last years when she was sick already or even at home, I’d never see her without jewelry. She’ll wear her mumu with tinkling bracelets,” Lucy recalls.
Together with designer Candice Dizon, the daughter of famed jeweler Jul B. Dizon, she launched the Lucy x Candice collection. The signature cameo collection features gemstones, pieces tinged with an old-world charm, and Lucy’s birthstone, turquoise.
“My collection revolves around the cameo. I chose that because I think I’m an old soul, I like old songs,” Lucy says. “This collection is special to me because they were able to make a few lockets. I’ve always liked the idea of putting the photos of your loved ones [in] there.”
When asked about her influences, she, like many of us, is inspired by many pretty things. “Everything that I’d like to have in my own jewelry box is what I put out there. I don’t think too hard about pleasing a big audience. I just stuck to what I felt right with the heart,” explains Lucy.
When asked about her favorite piece she inherited from her grandma, Lucy mentions a pair of prized earrings she got for correctly predicting her marriage to Richard Gomez. “All of us female grandchildren wanted those earrings. Then my lola said, ‘Okay, I’ll give these earrings to whoever could guess who she’ll end up marrying.’ At that time, we didn’t have boyfriends because we were very young, but I was already into Richard,” Lucy tells. “In 1998, I really did end up marrying Richard. Right before she died, she gave me those earrings… I made her remember that promise.”
Maybe after designing jewelry, Lucy should consider becoming a fortune-teller. For now, though, let’s revel in these pieces.
