BenCab is now fashion

Innovative fashion brand Freeway launched the fashion collection inspired by the art of National Artist BenCab last Tuesday at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

This is the latest in its National Artist Collector’s Series. The launch, during the week celebrating Philippine Independence Day, was among the activities marking the 50th anniversary retrospective of Benedicto Reyes Cabrera known as  BenCab.

BenCab’s art—his depiction of socio-political themes, particularly—has helped shape the Filipino identity.

Targeting the dynamic woman and art advocate, Freeway x BenCab Collection consists of vibrant colored shift dresses, work dresses, a wide variety of sublimation tops, maxi dresses, jumpsuits, kimonos and more.

Mostly adorned with his iconic  “Sabel,” these pieces go from day to night wear, ranging from casual to semi-formal.

The collection features woven fabrics, soft materials such as georgette, thick knits and comfy soft knits.

It comes with accessories such as pouches, coin purses and  tote bags.

“It’s nice to see my art being worn,” said BenCab at the launch.

Sheree Gotuaco, CEO of Elite Garments, the company behind Freeway, Solo and Ensembles, talked about traveling to Baguio to spend time with BenCab at the BenCab Museum. “He wondered why we were using just a few of his artworks in our designs. He gave us access to more.”

Guests at the launch—a mix of artists, art patrons and  media—got an early look at the clothes as models wearing pieces from the collection turned the CCP lobby into their catwalk.

Sheree had a message for BenCab conveyed at the event. “Thank you for allowing us to pay tribute to you and your works, for allowing your images to be used so more people can have access to them and be able to enjoy them. Thank you so much for being an integral part of Philippine art, culture, history.”
