Scents and sensibility

Fashion houses are cooking up a storm as they up their fragrance game. Johnny Depp has been revealed to be the new face of Christian Dior perfumes, and just last month, Alaïa launched his first fragrance in Paris. Certainly, creating fragrances establishes the designer as a far-reaching and prestigious brand name, especially when in collaboration with artists and celebrities. Here is an overview of the hottest scents that fashion houses are coming out with.

Prada Candy Kiss

With notes of Musk, Vanilla, Benzoin, and Caramel, the Prada Candy Kiss collection is ultra-feminine and allows one to indulge in excess. The gorgeous pink and gold bottle highlights the carefree and sensual aspect of the scent, and the truly unique aroma reveals a facet of the Prada woman: fun, seductive, and not afraid to take a walk on the wild side. With the collaboration of French visual artist Vahram Muratyan, eye-popping, colorful, and quirky animations show off the equally cute collection.

Marc Jacobs Mod Noir

Unlike Marc Jacobs’ other fragrances, which come in cute and quirky bottles, Marc Jacobs Mod Noir takes the classic Gardenia scent and elevates it into a contemporary sphere, complete with a super sleek, black and white bottle inspired by his own iconic runway collections. The floral fragrance gives one the experience of walking through a lush garden, opening up with the smell of dewy greens, and giving way to blooming Gardenias.

Kilian Sophie Matisse Art Edition Eau de Parfums

There are two ways to revamp a well-loved fragrance: add new and appealing ingredients to it, or redesign the bottle. Kilian Hennessy did both as he collaborated with painter and longtime friend Sophie Matisse to update his bestsellers. Bamboo Harmony, Good Girl Gone Bad, and Straight to Heaven were given new bottles inspired by Matisse’s great-grandfather Henri’s vividly hued cutouts, and the latter two scents were given a new splash of Neroli and Lemon, respectively. “The shapes and colors have a relationship between themselves that corresponds to the fragrances,” says Matisse, and indeed the refurbished fragrances have been given a fresh breath of air with her new designs.

Pharrell Williams Girl Eau de Parfum by Comme des Garçons

Do not be fooled by its name; Pharrell Williams Girl’s unisex scent features woody base notes such as Patchouli, Cedar, and Sandalwood giving way to flirtatious top notes of Lavender, White Pepper, and Neroli. The youthfully innocent fragrance is a collaboration between Williams and the avant-garde fashion house Comme des Garçons. Creating the perfume was also a learning experience for Williams. “I work with all the masters because it allows me a crash course into not only who they are as people, but into their art form, and their craft.” The importance he gives to crafting perfume adds integrity to Pharrell Williams Girl.
