Nowadays, looking like you run is as common as actually running.
Sneakers have been having something of a moment in the fashion industry over the past few years. From glittering versions at the Chanel and Dior runways to more minimalist pairs, it seems this practical as well as fashionable trend has been picked up by the fashion pack.
In a recent report in the Wall Street Journal, sales growth of running shoes dropped from high-performance footwear designed for athletes in favor of lower-priced models aimed at casual wear, a change that is altering the business of the athletic footwear market.
But the broader cause is the so-called “athleisure” trend that is reshaping the retail landscape as fitness blends seamlessly with fashion.
If there is one shoe that has defined that trend, it’s the Adidas Stan Smith. A popular tennis shoe from the ’60s (renamed after tennis pro Stan Smith in 1971), the shoe has become the sneaker of choice of the fashion crowd. It became even more popular after designers Marc Jacobs and Phoebe Philo were spotted wearing them. Philo even wore a pair to take her bow at Celine’s 2011 Spring-Summer show.
Since they were reissued in 2014, Stan Smiths have been flying off the shelves. It’s easy to understand why they sell well—the shoes’ blank slate can be worn with pretty much anything. That is, if you can manage to find a pair.
Fortunately, there are other stylish options worth trying. Some suggestions:
- Superga 2750 Cotu Classic sneakers. A simple chic canvas Italian-made sneaker, with a reasonable price tag.
- Vans’ Classic perforated leather sneaker. Slip-on style is comfy and easy to wear
- Adidas Superstar. With its unique shelltop design, this model is just as stylish as your Stan Smiths
- Golden Goose. If you’re willing to splurge a little more on sneakers, luxe leather versions from this brand come in a range of colors and finishes.
Golden Goose is available at www.farfetch.com. Vans is at Trinoma, Greenbelt 3 and Robinsons Galleria. Superga is available at Greenbelt 5 and Rustan’s Department Stores. Adidas is available at Power Plant Mall and Greenbelt 3.
