LEADING artists Justin Nuyda and Eduardo Castrillo join Rockwell Power Plant Mall’s “Focus on the Arts: Celebrating Filipino Art” through the exhibit “Search Mindscapes,” until July 30.
Nuyda’s career spans over 40 years. The artist’s “Mindscape” series is particularly notable as a bellwether in the development in Philippine abstraction.
A consummate amateur naturalist, Nuyda combines his expansive knowledge of butterflies and nature with a visual art practice that is geometrically logical yet organic. His canvases flow with dynamism and energy—a characteristic that suits the temperament of the artist himself.
Castrillo is renowned for his large and prolific monuments—particularly the People Power Monument at Edsa. His decades-long artistic career has seen him become the face of Philippine sculpture, earning him commissions even abroad.
Both Nuyda and Castrillo are founding members of the Saturday Group—along with National Artists Cesar Legaspi and José Joya.
This exhibit represents the first time these two stalwarts have collaborated for an exhibition of new works of paintings and sculptures.
Nostalgic works
At the Basement Concourse until July 30 are nostalgic works depicting Old Manila, Filipino pastimes and family.
Joining works by younger artists Richard Arimado, Jovan Benito and Aljo Pingol is a special exhibition of prints by National Artist Benedicto Cabrera and modernist Anita Magsaysay-Ho, who recently broke auction records for a painting sold for P51 million at the León Gallery auctions.
At the South Court is a special exhibition of works by contemporary artists Aileen Lanuza and Mimi Salibio. The exhibition merges the Pop Art practices of two of the most sought-after in the art scene today.
Lanuza won a Juror’s Choice Award from the Government Service Insurance System annual art competition. Her paintings have been included in the auctions of Larasati and Borobudur.
Salibio’s works are imbued with symbols and imagery that reflect her Buddhist background.
