Dominican sisters
The Congregation of Our Lady of Remedies, a diocesan congregation based in the Archdiocese of San Fernando, Pampanga, will celebrate its golden jubilee on Oct. 2.
The Dominican Sisters of Our Lady of Remedies was born during the winds of change unleashed by the Second Vatican Council (Vatican II) in 1965. It was founded by Archbishop Emilio Cinense and the Adrian Dominican Sisters in Michigan.
Four young Filipino women—Evangelina Fernandez, Esperanza Bonifacio, Digna San Vicente and Milagros Garcia—were sent to Adrian Michigan in 1962 where they had their initial formation.
In 1965 they returned to the Philippines as religious sisters—Sr. Mary Dominic, Sr. Mary Joseph, Sr. Thomas and Sr. Regina. Their first residence was in San Fernando, amid the marketplace, where they encountered the many faces of poverty, met the friendly vendors and their children, the jeepney drivers and the beggars. Their present mother house in San Fernando was completed in 1978.
As a diocesan congregation, said Sr. Rosita M. Yaya, OP, and Sr. Liberty Mendoza, OP, their “preaching mission are in four areas: education – as school administrators, teachers and guidance counselors; catechetics, they (the sisters) formed catechists to be sent to the public schools of the archdiocese; pastoral work – they formed lay leaders in the parishes; and social action – where they participate in uplifting the life of the poor in the rural areas.”
Although a diocesan congregation, the Dominican Sisters of Our Lady of Remedies has so grown that it already has foreign missions in Taiwan and Norway.
This column will provide more information about the Dominican congregation in the run-up to its golden jubilee.
