It’s hard to keep our balance these days when everything and everyone is in a rush. We sometimes need to take a breath, recharge and let positive thoughts reinforce us. We need to surround ourselves with words of encouragement, both at home and at work, and (literally) spread the good word!
Here is a cool idea that will take care of that, and is therapeutic, as well— inspirational rocks or stones! Paint words or phrases on plain garden stones that will get you going at a glance. Use them as paper weights at the office or as part of your table setting, giving your family and friends their own special message. They can take them home as keepsakes.
Here’s what you’ll need:
A smooth rock you found or bought
Pencil or chalk
A cup or container of water to rinse your brushes and thin the paint
A few paint brushes—liners, flats and rounds
Acrylic paint colors
Newspaper or some kind of cleanable surface to cover your work area
Paper towels or napkins to wipe your brushes on
A table or some kind of work surface to paint on
Clean your stone by washing with soap and water, with a toothbrush or any brush. If you need to smoothen some rough spots, use fine-grade sandpaper then wash off the dust.
Decide on a saying or words you would like to paint on your stone.
Pick out colors and purchase the corresponding acrylic colors.
Use a pencil or chalk to draw on the basic design first.
Let paint dry thoroughly between layers.
Remember to always start with the big areas before tackling the little details. You may also use Sharpie pens or markers for the small add-ons.
If you’re doing this with young kids, it’s safer to use Tempera or poster paint, then just spray a varnish later to make it more permanent.
