Since 1996, the famous Italian jewelry creator Roberto Coin has sketched about 51,000 designs for rings, bracelets, earrings and necklaces but only 15,000 of these have been executed so far.

“I choose which design to execute according to my mood,” Coin tells Inquirer Lifestyle in a one-on-one interview at Rustan’s Makati. The store exclusively carries Coin’s line of fine jewelry.

Coin says the choices are made with a lot of reflection. “Some designs are beautiful but sometimes, it is too early to put them (out). Sometimes, you think it may be too late. You got to have the right feeling (about the market),” he explains.

Those who design jewelry “have to interpret what you are going to like, what the consumer may wish to buy tomorrow. We have to anticipate your taste,” Coin adds.

The jewelry designer has been very successful so far in predicting what the market wants.

“My job is to know. My job is to be up to date. Like hems that go up or down, you (have to) know more or less how (women) would (like to) dress tomorrow,” Coin says.

The talent to predict good jewelry design comes “from experience and good taste,” he notes.

Turning serious, Coin points out that creative freedom is his greatest motivation in making jewelry designs that are copied all over the world.

“Creativity gives you the opportunity to be a free person, to decide what you want to do without anybody telling you. Creativity is freedom (and) being able to do what I like. It’s a beautiful world of freedom,” he exclaims.

Coin adds that jewelry making is a business but designers engaged in it don’t represent money, we represent beauty.”

Rustan’s has recently launched three Roberto Coin collections including the Black Jade collection featuring back jade and green agate stones in modern 18 karat gold settings; the New Barocco collection with the trademark “twisted cord” workmanship and the high-end Tanaquilla line with an ultra-feminine feel.
