Tanghalang Ateneo, the longest-running theater company of the Loyola Schools of the Ateneo de Manila University, opens its 37th season with “R.U.R. (Robot Unibersal ni Rossum).”
Written by Czech writer Karel Capek, with translation by Guelan Varela-Luarca and direction by JK Anicoche, this science-fiction classic about a rebellion by human-like robots runs Sept. 30, Oct. 1-3, 6-10 and 13-17 at Ateneo’s Fine Arts Black Box Theater.
“Utos ng Hari,” a devised production of Jun Cruz Reyes’ short story about a student’s rebellion his repressive school, with direction by Ricardo Abad, follows on Nov. 24-28, and Dec. 1-5 at Ateneo’s Fine Arts Black Box Theater.
“Kalantiaw,” written by Rene O. Villanueva with direction by Charles Yee, runs March 30-31, April 1-2, 5-9 and 12-6 at Ateneo’s Rizal Mini-Theater. Based on real-life events, “Kalantiaw,” originally entitled “Ang Kagila-gilalas na Kasinungalingan Tungkol sa Isang Kayumangging Bayan,” was a Palanca First Prize-winning play by the late Rene Villanueva about the life of historian José Marco and the hoax he created—the controversial Code of Kalantiaw.
