In celebration of the 400th Year of the Municipality of Los Baños, the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) through the Department of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences—together with Harmonya: The String Ensemble of UPLB; COMA193: Directed Studies in Theater Class; and Tanghalan UPLB Samasining—presents Om Velasco’s “Ang Barbero ng Laguna,” a Filipino adaptation of French playwright Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais’ “Le Barbier de Séville (The Barber of Seville).”

The production is artistically supervised and directed by theater and television director Joey Ting.

Reset to 19th-century Philippines but with contemporary touches, “Ang Barbero ng Laguna” is about the secret love of a wealthy handsome man, Almaviva, and the beautifully fragile Rosalinda, through the help of Figaro, the town’s barber.

This hilarious comedy of intrigue is all about determination, hope and love while also commenting on the social conditions and ills of past and contemporary Philippine societies.

The production cast is headed by Anton Segismundo, alternating with Isko Valera, as Almaviva; Sarina Sasaki, alternating with Matel Patayon, as Rosalinda; and Josiah Santos, alternating with Third Alub, as Figaro.

Ting, who also does the set and lights design, leads the artistic and production team, in collaboration with Jeremy de la Cruz (choreography and movement); Jonathan Macuroy (music direction); Eunice del Rosario and Desiree Escobido (set design collaboration); Joanna Sta. Maria and Hannah Santos (costume design and makeup); Sarah Masiba, Kristoffer Tiña and Samantha Marasigan (dramaturgy); James Bella (lights head); Yinyin Alfonso (technical direction and visual effects); Christine Joy See (production management), et al.

“Ang Barbero ng Laguna” will run Oct. 21 to 23, 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. performances, at the Maquiling Performance Garden, College of Arts and Sciences Annex 2 Building, UP Los Baños, Laguna.
