How to wear your hair now: elongated bobs, ‘cosplay’ cuts and Carmen Miranda

Each year brings on a hair trend that makes every woman and magazine around swoon—whether it was the gamine style or the long, flowing curls made popular by Brazilian models.

This early, hairstylist Henri Calayag is calling 2016 the year of “going your own way.” Whether that involves Carmen Miranda, his source of inspiration for the season, or, in the case of Alex Carbonell, a computer-generated model with a pop pixie, it’s entirely up to you.

What kind of haircut should women try this year?

Some have hit the genetic jackpot with their tresses. Some need a bit more loving attention and extraordinary care.

Happily, 2016 is all about “go your own way,” a celebration of individuality. Every strand, no matter the length or texture, deserves some TLC. Commit to biweekly hair spa days of heated conditioners, hot oil treatments or protein treatments. If you want to enjoy a year of soft, healthy and super strong hair, don’t skip out on deep conditioners.

Try natural solutions, if you wish. Not all miracles come in a bottle. Experiment with the wonders of natural ingredients like honey, avocados, oils and other things that are gentle on your tresses. A break from chemicals and hard to pronounce ingredients is never a bad thing.

For the most daring of women, what should they try?

Dare to change it up. Get out of your comfort zone. Upgrade your look with new hair color. You can have bangs, an inverted bob, asymmetrical bob. For up-dos, try twisted buns, wear hair in a bind. Think Carmen Miranda if you wish to dress up your hair. School girl charms such as embellished hair bands and jeweled barrettes tie hair sweet and low.

What should women be doing now that they haven’t done before?

Sometimes dryness can easily sneak up on us, and before you know it we’re dealing with breakage, hair loss and dandruff. A daily spritz of water-based leave-in conditioner will take you a long way.

Be aware of any texture changes, growth progress and overall hair “mood.” When you are more attentive to your hair, you are more likely to commit to healthy hair routines. Love your crowning glory. The most important hair resolution you should make is to love your hair—no matter what! Straight, wavy, curly, fine or thick hair, you owe it to yourself to fully accept and love your natural beauty.

What kind of haircut should women try this year?

Lengths touching collarbone, away from the straight perm, like a long natural bob.

For the most daring of women, what should they try?

A long mushroom cut with elegance.

Is there a fashion or beauty campaign that’s inspiring you now?

This season’s Gucci, Saint Laurent and Chanel.

What should women be doing now that they haven’t done before?

We need to know how to shampoo by ourselves properly. Then we need to know how to blow-dry by ourselves.

What kind of haircut should women be trying out this year?

We see a lot of layered bobs with solid outlines that are shoulder length. Chic and simple. The layers are minimal just to give movement and texture. We see wavy bobs for more textured waves. We see voluminous layers, especially in the crown area, to really exaggerate bouncy hair.

For the most daring of women, what should they try?

We always want drastic change in cuts by giving some pixie gamine cuts, which are defined by the following: asymmetric fringe, softer and textured sides, head-hugging back, tousled and ruffled crown area, and some disconnections and undercuts.

Is there a fashion or beauty campaign that’s inspiring you now?

Louis Vuitton’s (LV) “cosplay” androgynous model with pastel coral pink hair and disconnected rocker chic cut with straight fringe and big waves. In one photo, everything is a statement! In terms of their hair? Same ad campaign of LV, from head to foot.

Hair has four key points: asymmetric, textured, disconnected, undercuts and C-curvature, which means, the side outline creates a “C” shape. Awesome campaign. Very futuristic.

What should women be doing now that they haven’t done before?

Customize their shampoo and conditioner according to their hair problem. What they wear begins with their hair.

Color completes the cut! It’s really about placement and the richness of color. Don’t color for the sake of it, but for defining your personality and the cut.

Products start from cleansing, to conditioning, to pre-styling and to finishing. At Aveda, the range is enormous! We can even finish a salon session by putting eye cream under the eye area for instant lift, or a lipgloss for shine and a more supple look.

Color is millions of shades and tones. Don’t be boring with only one hue. Be dimensional, be creative!

Lastly, treat your hair and soul with renewal rituals: head massage, hair treatment and scalp treatment. Your scalp is the foundation of your  hair. Treat it right.
