MISS Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach has put to rest rumors on why she cried backstage after winning the prestigious beauty pageant.

Many netizens were quick to attribute her breakdown, which was captured on video and became viral, to the controversial turn of events during the coronation night last December 20 (US time).

During that night, host Steve Harvey incorrectly announced that Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez won the crown, only to retract it minutes later. After being crowned as the rightful winner, Wurtzbach tried to console Gutierrez but she was stopped by some of her fellow contestants. She was then brought to the backstage.

Two months later, Wurtzbach revealed the reason why she sobbed backstage.

In a video of TV100 and Mega Magazine released recently, the Filipino beauty icon said that the thought of offering her victory to Filipinos was why she teared up.

“It was something that I kept imagining inside my head, over and over and over again for years and for some reason, I just kept thinking about the Philippines, how much this would mean to them. It means a lot tom me but it means more to them. So that’s what I was thinking backstage and that’s when I started crying,” Wurtzbach said in the video.

“All the years of sacrifice, all the years of training, everything that happened to me makes sense now because of this moment,” she said.
