So you want to write your memoirs

A WORKSHOP for members and non-members of Sunshine Place (Senior Hub) who may want to try their hand at discovering themselves through writing is ongoing.

Oscar Peñaranda, award-winning short story writer and educator, is conducting five sessions of memoir writing workshop, at two hours each session.

Classes are Wednesdays and Thursdays. The first class consists of introduction, the different ways of writing one’s thoughts, and the several purposes of each kind and the definition of memoir writing.

Each session will be composed of various writing assignments, categories, lectures and discussions of writings from the class.

Second session will be about birth and childhood, third about youth and coming of age, fourth about turning points in adulthood, marriage or singlehood, and family.

The final session will have a culminating activity in which each participant will present (with family and friends) their respective writings.

The presentation will be multimedia: some dramatizations, with participant providing their own resources such as scripts, reenactment, speeches, artworks, films, photos, or whatever they decide to do with the writings they produced during the five sessions.

Peñaranda is a recipient of the Gawad Pambansang Alagad ni Balagtas award, a prestigious award given by the Unyon ng mga Manunulat sa Pilipinas. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Literature and master’s in Creative Writing from the San Francisco State University.
