FERNANDO Modesto’s “Love the Earth, Heal the Spirit” runs till March 15 at Hiraya Gallery.
Modesto has been a presence in Philippine art since the late ’60s. A colorful persona known for his loud laughter and irreverence. Modesto is back and so are his angels—floating and flying in his pastel landscapes (“Angel in Flight”) and fantasy takes on his favorite artists (“Tapies” and “Picasso’s Back”) giving us a glimpse of his more spiritual side. His artworks continue to be colorful with bright splashes of paint and textured molding paste.
The show’s title “Love the Earth, Heal the Spirit” seems to hark back to his comments on the environment in the past and shows in landscapes of places he has visited—“Capri,” “Tuscany” and “Syquijor.” He captures the beauty, ethereal quality of the caves of Capri, the trees of Tuscany and the mystical ambiance of the island of Syquijor.
Modesto’s works have been exhibited here and abroad.
