ONSTYLE and his choice of clothes: “Off the court, my style is really simple classic—I’m a jeans and T-shirt kind of guy. When I have dinners and on special occasions, I like towear a suit. Now, having the help of Tommy Hilfiger makes fashion easy and fun!”

In an exclusive interview via e-mail, grand slam champion and sports icon Rafael Nadal talks about things other than tennis, showing a part not so well known to his fans—style.

The new ambassador of lifestyle brand Tommy Hilfiger isn’t coy about his style preferences.

Listen. Go Rafa!

What is your link to Tommy Hilfiger, the person and the brand?

I first met Tommy in 2007 in Monaco at the Monte Carlo Grand Slam, and he’s become a great friend. When he approached me for the collaboration, I was very excited to work with my friend, and one of the world’s most renowned fashion designers.

What styles or clothes are your favorites, on- and off-court?

On the tennis court I love bright, strong and fearless colors. Off the court, my style is really simple classic—I’m a jeans and T-shirt kind of guy. When I have dinners and on special occasions, I like to wear a suit. Now, having the help of Tommy Hilfiger makes fashion easy and fun!

When you are playing golf, what’s your favorite attire? How about when you’re sailing?

My biggest priority in picking clothes is that they’re comfortable, no matter the occasion.

When you’re not busy on the court or preparing for a Slam, what do you like to do?

I like golf, swimming and diving—I grew up on Mallorca so I love being near the sea. Unfortunately I can’t do a lot of sports like soccer or skiing, due to the high risk of injuries. I also love being at home with my family in Mallorca; I try to go back as often as I can.

In your fashion shoots, you seem to be a natural. Do you get nervous before the camera? Do you enjoy it?

Being a model isn’t a new experience for me—I’ve been doing it for years. I don’t consider it part of my personal life, but it’s still part of my public life. I have always tried to learn new things in my life—in this case, working with Tommy Hilfiger and getting to know the fashion world more in-depth is something that interests me and motivates me.

How hard are you preparing now for Roland-Garros?

I love competition, and that’s what motivates me. I always want to stay at my maximum level and be able to compete with the best.
