A 12-hour festival for zines—small handmade booklets, short for fanzines or magazines—will be held in Cebu tomorrow, April 16, showcasing the work of over 50 zine makers from all over the Philippines and around the world.
Participants include designers, artists, musicians, studios, presses, bookshops as well as independent publishers.
The first annual edition of the Cebu Zine Fest 2016 will be held at 856G Gallery in Mandaue City and include several hands-on workshops, from lino printmaking, zine making, and publishing.
There will also be a “DEAR time” (Drop Everything And Read) section, and a “zine wall” for zine makers who were unable to register in time for a place to showcase their zines at the fair.
With a strong regional attendance from the Philippines, there will also be exhibitors from New York, Singapore, Berlin, Kanazawa, London and Seoul.
Participants can experience different mediums and methods for DIY publishing that traverse the themes of expression, disruption, protest, love, hate, disgust, banality, reality, sex, gore, food, music, memories, travel, words, theory, emotion and more.
A linocut workshop will be presided by Cebu-based monoprint artist Jeffrey Sisican in the afternoon, followed by an alternative photography and zine production workshop by photographer Brian Sergio.
Visitors can buy publications directly from publishers, artists, and designers who create handmade publications.
They can also enjoy various events including workshops, panel discussions, live music, great coffee and tasteful snacks.
