Prints, fringes, florals plus neon–boho meets edgy this summer

Contemporary street style” is the look for for this summer. Perk up your wardrobe with geometric prints, gold accessories, fringes and a bit of neon.

“The look is very millennial-inspired—practical, versatile and updated,” said stylist Luis Espiritu, who put together the SM Store’s 2016 Summer collection that was showcased at the recent “Style Up” fashion show in SM Makati.

Presenting the summer collection for men, women and kids were models and celebrities, including Inquirer Lifestyle columnist Tessa Prieto-Valdes and daughters Annika and Athena, stylists Daryl and Andre Chang, photographer Jo Ann Bitagcol, club owner GP Reyes, and bloggers Gabs and Chi Gibbs.

For women, Espiritu said florals are fine, but girls can also wear geometric prints and denims with a fringed top or bottom for an artisanal look.

“Coco Cabana has boho-inspired pieces that are not too gypsy—something you can use to layer.”

Harem pants

We spotted a white tunic tank paired with tribal-print harem pants, an unbuttoned denim shirt dress layered over a cropped top and dark skinny jeans, a white kimono worn with chambray culottes.

Monochromes are okay, too, but choose ones with pleats or subtle ruffles to add texture.

Complete your chosen look with comfy shoes, such as wedges and stacked heels in basic colors—black, white or caramel. Or add a pop of color by wearing strappy heels, pumps or sandals in bright, electric shades.

On the beach, Espiritu suggested mixing classics with edgy pieces to take a look from day to night: “Wear a bikini with fringed poncho as cover-up. In the evening, add a pair of dressy tailored shorts or skirt and some gold statement accessories.”

Botanical prints for men

Men can go experimental with botanicals prints which are “dainty but still masculine.” A botanical or floral top, for instance, can be paired with checkered or striped pants or shorts.

Kids, meanwhile, can go all-out adventurous. “It’s not pink for girls and blue for boys anymore,” said Espiritu. “Children can wear clothes in bold, vibrant colors with fun prints, and still wear neon caps and shades.”
