Virtual encyclopedia at one’s fingertips

At a young age I developed a deep fascination for science. Reading all the Encyclopædia Britannica books at home from A to Z, I started learning about the planets, biology, zoology, history and just about everything else.

Alone in my room, huddled in bed, a reading lamp at my side, my nose between the pages of a book—those were the best nights of my youth.

My passion for reading and writing grew because of my interest in science. As an adult, I realized that reading gave me an advantage in school.

Kids today are lucky to have the Internet and places like The Mind Museum (TMM) to nurture their curious minds.

TMM, in partnership with Inquirer Group’s Megamobile and Globe Telecom, developed an application that would provide students, teachers and everyone else interested access to over 250 museum exhibits anytime and anywhere using their tablets or smartphones.

The app, the first of its kind in the country, contains a virtual encyclopedia that deals with a wide array of topics and questions.

“With the app, we can now truly say that science is everywhere,” says TMM curator Maria Isabel Garcia. “While being inside the museum completes your fun learning experience, having the app brings you closer, like no other technology can, to what animates the museum inside out. With this app, kids of all ages will now experience it at their fingertips.”

When the app was being created, explains Megamobile’s Brigette Tan Villarin, “We first brought the artists and developers to the museum. We wanted them to experience the sights and activities firsthand… The look and feel of the app mirrors the interiors of the museum.”

The app may be downloaded for free and is available for Android and Apple devices. It has crisp controls and has a responsive and intuitive interface.

Aside from the extensive in-app TMM exhibit guide, notable features include a section where educators and students can discover facts organized in K-12 education topics, and another section containing videos of do-it-yourself science experiments.

With such information at one’s fingertips, I can’t help but feel a bit envious of kids today.
