Our favorite Monroe bread is back

These ladies who lunch got the thrill of their lives and became easily engulfed in child-like joy, “aliw,” that jubilant feeling of  kids when presented  a new toy.

The “new toy” that brought excitement to us ladies who lunch was this new Japanese restaurant, Genki Sushi, in the new Stopover Pavilion at the Bonifacio Global City.

Over at Ayala Town Center (ATC) in Alabang, Muntinlupa, an old favorite loaf, the Monroe, resurfaced in a full-service restaurant carrying its brand name, Jipan.

Indeed our group went Japanese the past weeks, and thoroughly enjoyed our eating adventures.

It was almost like an accident when the group chose to have lunch in this complex, considering regular get-togethers, selecting a restaurant has become rather difficult.

New places have cropped up and a decision has become a challenge to make.

It was an exciting choice as the place was really aliw!

Dining area—This is where the fun begins.  The place is small and doesn’t have tables for groups of more than six, presumably because this restaurant has set up a new way to serve. Very digital, if we may call it that.

Each banquette has a TV monitor and other gadgets. Everything a diner wants is available with the press of a button/key, like a serve-yourself.

The monitor shows the range of offerings, illustrated on the menu—sushis, toppings etc. One presses a key, then the order button. Soon enough, a pull-train rolls down the railing with the specific food.

Service—Very quick

Staff—As one gets seated, a staff comes and explains the system. This takes away the hassle of having to wave for service, which, as very diner knows, could be a test to one’s patience. But the staff is ready to assist.

Suggested orders—There are many favorites. One can’t go wrong with sushis and sashimis but the rice toppings are worth trying as well. Get the chicken with black pepper or the grilled unagi.

We predict more restaurants will adopt this system.

Service and government charges are added to the bill. Senior cards are honored.

Jipan

The popular loaf, the Monroe, is here. Those who have been missing this, from its early days in Makati, can double the thrill— lunch and purchase the bread and some others.

Dining area—The space is rather tight, tables and chairs are so closely arranged.

Service— Quick

Staff—There’s enough gracious staff to respond to calls.

Suggested orders—There’s a good array of comfort food, but go for a set meal which comes with soup and salad. The Teriyaki Salmon or Beef is done very well.

For dessert, the Coffee Jelly was a disappointment, served in a tall glass, the thick cream lumped in the             coffee cubes—too dry.

Check out the counter of cakes and sweets.

Of course, buy the Monroe (soft and flavorful) or bring home the unique Kouign (pronounced queen) Amman, a sweet bread baked in butter with caramelized sugar.

Service and government taxes are included in the bill. Senior cards are honored.
