Perfect pairing: all-day breakfast with British-blended coffee

Breakfast food is comfort food, and at Costa Coffee, you don’t even have to wake up early for it.

The British coffee chain recently rolled out its new all-day breakfast menu, which goes well with Costa’s well-loved coffee. Initially serving paninis, flatbreads and cakes, the food menu gets an update with breakfast sandwiches, a cold pasta and decadent desserts.

Costa Coffee has opened six branches in the Philippines since it was launched in Manila in 2015. It’s been around since 1971, with 3,000 branches worldwide.

Recently, over midday “breakfast” at the Bonifacio Global City branch, Costa Coffee general manager Corinne Milagan gave us sandwich and coffee pairing suggestions.

We started off with something familiar, English muffin sandwiches paired with Café Americano. The Bacon, Egg & Cheese English Muffin has a subtle smoky flavor, while the Ham, Egg & Cheese Muffin is a safe choice if you don’t know what to order.

The Beef Pastrami with Gherkins Sandwich is a crowd-pleaser. It has thinly sliced tender roast beef, gooey cheddar and gherkins that gives a nice crunch to the flatbread. Pair this with a Flat White, a full-bodied creamy coffee.

For something Asian, order the BBQ Pulled Pork sandwich—parmesan soft roll filled with sweet and tangy pulled pork marinated in hickory barbeque sauce, and topped with cheddar and mayo. Have this with a strong and frothy Cappuccino.

If you like crunchy bread, go for the Grilled Chicken and Prosciutto Ham Sandwich. It has grilled chicken saltimbocca, smoked prosciutto and roasted bell pepper between toasted flatbread. This one goes well with a Café Latte.

Light fare, dessert

For a light snack, try the cold Pesto Pasta Salad with Grilled Chicken matched your choice of matcha: Green Tea Frostino, Ice Shaken Green Tea Latte or Hot Green Tea Latte.

Milagan said these food items are unique to Costa Coffee Philippines, since “having coffee” here means having meals, and staying in the coffee shop to get work done, chitchat or chill.

“That’s also why we have couches and comfy chairs, long tables, multiple sockets for charging and free Wi-Fi.”

And what’s coffee without dessert?

Check out the new Tray Bakes, sweet squares similar to brownies. It comes in chewy S’mores flavor, Banana Chocolate Brownie and Peanut Butter Brownie Swirl. These are usually ordered with hot or iced coffee, lemonade or a Frostino—a Pinoy favorite.

Frostino is Costa’s ice blended coffee that comes in Coffee Cream, Mocha Cream, Caramel Latte Cream, Double Chocolate Cookie Mocha, Raspberry and White Chocolate Cream. It may be too sweet for some but most people have no problem with that says Milagan.

“It’s sweet, but people still order it with dessert. And it’s a great refresher for summer.”
