Abstract stalwarts Orlina, Nuyda mount collaborative exhibit

SCULPTOR Ramon Orlina and painter Justin Nuyda, two foremost abstractionists, mount a collaborative show, “Luminous Inspirations,” which opens today at the north court of Power Plant Mall in Rockwell, Makati City.

Part of the ongoing three-week art fest at Rockwell, “Luminous Inspirations” provides a platform for a unique collaboration between two stalwarts of Philippine Modernism.

Orlina is a glass sculptor known for his abstracted glass works, while Nuyda is a painter known for his “Mindscape” series of abstracted landscapes.

Friends since their days studying at University of Santo Tomas, the two artists are of the same mindset when it comes to a conceptual approach to art. However, they have never exhibited together—until now.

“Luminous Inspirations” gathers 17 new major works by Orlina and 15 new major works by Nuyda—works they have prepared specifically for this exhibition, and inspired by each other’s careers.

Concurrent to the show is an exhibit at Power Plant Mall’s concourse level, “Vanguards of Genre Art,” featuring genre paintings depicting scenes of everyday life in the tradition of Damian Domingo and Fernando Amorsolo.

Featured are works by young artists such as Aljo Pingol, Aia Halili, Richard Arimado, Jovan Benito and Francis Nacion.

Rockwell art fest runs until July 24. It is a partnership between Power Plant Mall and Galerie Joaquin. Call 7239418; e-mail info@galeriejoaquin.com.
