You can look 40 when you’re 60 | Lifestyle.INQ

What do you do when a certain beauty or health problem suddenly manifests itself?

Here are some trivia that could shed light on many of your conditions.

Spotless skin

If they can embrace a wellness lifestyle, women in their 60s can look like they are only in their 40s. However, if you have had certain bad habits, your skin, which is the best barometer of youth, could suffer.

For example, Irish is in her late 50s and has a trim and fit body. However, the sight of her flaky hands reveals her age. What did she do?

Blotches could be age spots. But they are not inevitable. If you have exposed your unprotected skin to the cruel heat of the sun and damaging ultraviolet rays (or even baked yourself in a tanning machine), chances are your spots may show permanently.

Age spots like these mean that your body tried to protect itself repeatedly by producing an overabundance of melanin—the pigment cells of the skin. Pregnant women beware. Don’t go under the noon sun without wearing sunblock.

There is a chance you could develop the so-called mask of pregnancy, a light to dark patch on one’s skin. This melasma could go away for as long as you stay away from the sun. Also, try to stay away from substances called asoralens, which are present in foods like lime and parsley.

When you handle these foods, wash your hands immediately and keep them away from the face. Should it touch your skin, it will increase skin sensitivity to the sun.

Make it a habit to use sunblock. Apply on all exposed skin surfaces, especially the neck, hands and feet. Take note that certain substances in perfumes, like bergamot or musk, also heighten skin sensitivity to the sun, so check the ingredients of your fragrances.

A 30-percent hydrogen peroxide solution could help lighten smaller age spots. Apply a dab on your little spots nightly (consult a dermatologist first). However, there are newly developed lightening creams on the market today.

Cellulite

It is simply fat. And the best way to reduce it is not by spot exercising in the gym, but through a total body workout. Burning fat through an aerobic activity, one that gets your heart rate up and keeps it within an aerobic range for 20 minutes, is the most effective way to remove or reduce cellulite.

Stoke up the metabolism through brisk walking, running, biking, dancing and swimming, which are efficient fat-burners. Eat a low-fat diet. The more vegetables on your plate, the less fat on your body.  High-fiber foods are fat-burners. Weight training also improves skin tone and elasticity.

Try a regular massage weekly to get your circulation going. Deep tissue massage is recommended. See your dermatologist for the latest in skin treatments; radio frequencies or RF and ultrasound regimens have been successful in smoothening the skin if done repeatedly over a period of two to three months. Limit your exposure to the sun to prevent further skin deterioration.

Double chin

Would you believe that women store fat on their necks just as easily as on the thighs and hips? There are three major factors that contribute to a double chin—time, body fat and anatomy.

Age will increase the odds for developing a double chin. Considered a natural consequence of the aging process, double chins are inevitable. But one thing is for sure: fat/overweight women develop double chins faster than thin women. The best way to rid yourself of a double chin is to lose 10-15 lb.

Don’t even consider asking a plastic surgeon to remove it. The first advice he will give you is to lose weight.

Quick remedies: get a new haircut, preferably a length that reaches your jawline. Long hair tends to draw attention to your chin and neck. Makeup that emphasizes the eyes draws attention away from the chin.

Fashion wise, if you drop your neckline, you will focus more on your chest area instead of your chin or jaw. Don’t use turtlenecks; they emphasize the double chin. And as for jewelry, chokers will only emphasize the neck. Try something long around the neck like a strand of pearls. Earrings should be studs, not dangling.
