PHILIPPINE Ambassador to the United States José Cuisia recently unveiled painter Dominic Rubio’s mural, “The Great Promenade of Philippine-American Friendship,” at Chancery Annex building of the Philippine Embassy.
Measuring 8×27 feet, the mural tells the story of the enduring ties between the Philippines and the United States. Its depiction of key events in Philippines-US relations reminds the viewer that more than the political, security and economic interests, it is the shared history and values that bind the two nations.
A native of Paete, Laguna, Rubio was educated at University of Santo Tomas. His artistic signature of long, pencil-thin necks and the delightful nostalgia of men and women depicted in the Philippine colonial past have made him a favorite of collectors in Asia and North America.
At the unveiling were Rubio, new Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana, Gloria and Bobby Federigan, Katrina Borja-Martin and Darell Artates.
Apart from the Rubio mural, other donated artworks were presented to the public: “Mist,” a sculpture by Impy Pilapil; the bust of Dr. José Rizal from the National Historical Commission of the Philippines; Cocoon Series by Ann Pamintuan; and photo-realism by Joey Manlapaz.
