LIGHTS flashing, drums banging, heart pumping. Welcome to the world of collegiate sports.
As a freshman, you bleed your school colors. You are excited to cheer your lungs out and support your team all the way to the championship.
Here are some tips to help you enjoy the experience a little more, whether you are a first-timer or a long-time fan of the UAAP.
1. Know the rules
Knowing the rules of the game will ensure that you understand what’s happening on the court. Your friends will also appreciate you not asking them what’s happening after every play.
2. Buy some merchandise
No, your PE shirt does not count. Nothing shouts school spirit more than your school’s name or mascot emblazoned on a shirt. It’s a visual representation of cheering and you look good doing it, too!
3. Know the cheers
More than just shouting “Go team!” or “Defense!” there is something about hundreds of people yelling in unison, willing the team to victory. Some players even play better when they hear their favorite cheers. You have the opportunity to help the team to victory!
4. Be a sport
Your team will not win every time. You must be magnanimous in victory and humble in defeat. Do not jeer or insult. Remember that you represent your school.
5. Have fun
This is the most important part. The games are such a joy to watch and a great way to relieve stress caused by the rigors of academics. Remember to have fun, win or lose!
To every member school in the UAAP, good luck and may the best team win!
