NOTABLE Singaporean poets and an award-winning Filipino author will read their works and hold book discussions with local readers and writers at Solidaridad Bookshop on Padre Faura Street, Ermita, Manila on Sept. 17, 5 p.m.
The affair will be hosted by the Philippine PEN.
Palanca-winning writer Noelle de Jesus will read excerpts from her English translation of Edgardo M Reyes’ famous Tagalog novel, “Sa Mga Kuko ng Liwanag,” to be published by Ethos Books of Singapore.
Reyes’s novel is the basis of the celebrated 1975 Lino Brocka classic, “Maynila sa mga Kuko ng Liwanang,” voted among the “1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die,” a best-selling film guide published by Quintessence Editions of London.
Singapore’s Aaron Lee and Yong Shu Hong will join De Jesus and read poems from their books, also published by Ethos.
Lee will be reading from his book “Coastlands,” his third and latest collection of poems where he documents his search for his place under the sun.
His first collection of poems, “A Visitation of Sunlight,” was voted by the the Singapore Straits Times as one of 1997’s best books. His second book, “Five Right Angles,” was a finalist in the 2008 Singapore Literature Prize awards.
Meanwhile, Shu Hong is expected to read from his book, “The Viewing Party,” which won the 2014 Singapore Literature Prize.
Aside from the two Singapore poets, Ethos Books representative Ng Kah Gay will also be present in discussion.
Ethos Books was established in 1997. It is now one of the leading book publishers in Singapore.
