Aid sought for ‘Lawin’ victims

Caritas Manila and Radio Veritas 846 are collecting donations in cash and in kind for the relief and rehabilitation of northern Luzon provinces hit by supertyphoon “Lawin.”

Affected by “Lawin” were the archdiocese of Tuguegarao, apostolic vicariate of Tabuk, diocese of Ilagan, diocese of Bayombong, diocese of Laoag, diocese of Bangued, apostolic vicariate of Bontoc-Lagawe, prelature of Batanes.

Cash donations may be deposited in any of the Caritas Manila savings accounts: Banco de Oro (5600-45905); Bank of the Philippine Islands (3063-5357-01); and Metrobank (175-3-175069543).

For dollar accounts: Bank of the Philippine Islands (3064-0033-5, swift code-BOPIPHMM); and Philippine National Bank (108566600025, swift code-PNBMPHMM).

For proper acknowledgment, donors may fax a copy of the deposit slip (with their names and complete addresses) to 5639306 or e-mail a scanned copy to caritas_manila@yahoo.com.

 

 

New Baguio bishop

Pope Francis has named Msgr. Victor Bendico of the Archdiocese of Capiz as the new bishop of the diocese of Baguio, succeeding Bishop Carlito Cenzon, who has retired.

The 56-year-old new bishop  is the rector of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Roxas City.

 

 

Bendico took his philosophical and theological studies at the University of Santo Tomas Central Seminary in Manila. He holds a doctorate in sacred liturgy from the Pontifical Athenaeum of St. Anselm in Rome, Italy.

 

Radio Veritas wins awards

 

Radio Veritas (RV) was awarded as one of the Most Outstanding Institutions for 2016 by the Quezon City government.

 

 

 

 

Fr. Bong Bongayan, SVD, assistant to the RV president, received the Manuel L. Quezon Gawad Parangal from Mayor Herbert Bautista.

 

 

 

 

Trinity University of Asia also named Veritas 846 as  Values-Oriented Radio Station in its 2016 Platinum Stallion Media Awards.

 

RV  news program, “Veritas Pilipinas,” meanwhile, won the Hildegarde Award under the Broadcast Journalism—radio category of the 10th Hildegarde Awards for Women in Media and Communication of St. Scholastica’s College Manila.

New leadership

Fr. Napeleon Sipalay Jr., OP,  has been elected prior provincial during the recent 11th provincial chapter of the Philippine Dominican Province (PDP). He was prior of the Priory of Our Lady of the Rosary of Manaoag in Pangasinan before his election.

Before coming back to the Philippines to be head of the Manaoag convent, he was in the  PDP mission in Sri Lanka for nine years during which he also taught at the National Seminary of Our Lady of Lanka in Kandy.

Father Sipalay replaces Fr. Gerard Francisco Timoner III, OP,  who has been appointed socius or assistant for the Asia-

Pacific by Dominican Master General Fr. Bruno Cadore. This means he will be based in the Dominican curia in Santa Sabina in Rome. Fr. Timoner is also the lone Philippine  member of the International Theological Commission that advises Pope Francis.

To mark the 800th anniversary celebration of the Order of Preachers, Santo Domingo Church in Quezon City is holding every Wednesday, 5:30 p.m., the perpetual novena to Saint Dominic de Guzman, founder of the Dominican Order.

 

Santo Domingo Church is also holding the perpetual novena to the Santissimo Rosario de La Naval de Manila every Saturday, 5:30 p.m. Mass follows at 6 p.m.
