Piano competition
The 2017 Leonor Kilayko Piano Competition was launched recently at the University of the Philippines Bahay ng Alumni.
Founded by concert pianist and pedagogue par excellence Leonor Kilayko, in cooperation with the Keyboard Department of the UP College of Music and Steinway Boutique Manila, the competition aims to encourage young pianists in the Philippines to achieve excellence in performance, discover the best among their ranks, present the winners to a wider audience and support their artistic development.
The competition is open to pianists of all nationalities ages 16-21 who are residents of the Philippines (first prize winners of past piano competitions are not eligible to join). It will be held Aug. 28-Sept. 8, 2017, at the Abelardo Hall Auditorium and Minihall, UP College of Music, Ylanan Street, UP Diliman campus, Quezon City.
Contestants must submit a complete and duly signed application form, two copies of 2” x 2” colored photos with white background (one attached to the application form), a copy of their birth certificate or passport, a brief biography (not more than 300 words), a digital copy of a profile photo with a resolution of at least 300 dpi, and five sets of scores for the first and second rounds of the competition and the Filipino piece for the elimination round. Also required is a nonrefundable application fee of P1,000.
Application forms must be submitted to the UP College of Music Keyboard Department, c/o professor Ena Aldecoa and Mita Fernandez starting July 10, 2017 and not later than 4 p.m. of July 28, 2017.
The first prize winner will be awarded the Don Pio Sian Melliza Prize, with P30,000 and a plaque; second prize is the Sian-Kilayko Prize and P20,000 plus medal, while the third prize will be the Dr. Alfredo R. Sian Prize, with P10,000 plus medal.
Two honorable mention prizes will also be given: the Miguel Castro Prize of P5,000 plus medal and the Asuncion Kilayko-Ng Prize of P5,000 plus medal. The best interpretation of the classic work will receive P5,000 plus medal.
Winners will have performance engagements within the country and will be featured artists of the Saturdays at Steinway Recital Series and the UP College of Music Keyboard Department Recital series.
