The award-winning movie “Poveda,” about the inspiring true story of the revolutionary St. Pedro Poveda, will open in selected Ayala Malls Cinemas on Dec. 7.

Presented by the Teresian Association International Inc., the film tells the life story of St. Pedro Poveda Castroverde, his priestly, social and educational activities that ushered the Teresian Association, the lay Catholic organization he founded.

Awarded Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Director at the recently concluded Buenos Aires Nonstop Art Festival, the film is directed by Pablo Moreno, who also wrote the screenplay with Pedro Delgado. The outstanding cast includes Raul Escudero in the role of Poveda and Elena Furiase as Josefa Segovia.

The film also received the Best Film award from the jury of the International Catholic Film Festival Mirabile Dictu 2016. It won the Outstanding International Award of Excellence at the International Film Festival for Peace, Inspiration and Equality held in Jakarta.

Poveda (born in Linares, 1874; died in Madrid, 1936) opened paths in the field of education. He pioneered the rights of women in early 20th-century Spain. In 1974, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization recognized him as “educator and humanist.” Blessed John Paul II canonized him in 2003. —CONTRIBUTED
