Since 2012, mecha and anime fans have made a pilgrimage to Odaiba, Tokyo, to lay eyes on the gigantic 1/1 scale statue of the iconic Gundam RX-78-2. Image Gundam Front Tokyo

Even non-hardcore Gundam fans were thrilled when the giant 1/1 scale RX-78-2 went up in Odaiba, Tokyo, back in 2012. But this statue to geekdom is now counting down the days to when it will be decommissioned.

The Gundam, which has been a very popular attraction for tourists and fans alike, has been scheduled to be taken down on March 5, 2017, reports Kotaku.

While the news is indeed sad, word has it that a new and better Gundam will be put together in place of the RX-78-2. Additionally, Gundam’s 40th anniversary will be in 2019 and it’s as good a bet as any that the new Gundam will rise by then.  Alfred Bayle
