Lydia Velasco and Dominic Rubio will be exhibiting together in “Duo: Dominic Rubio and Lydia Velasco” on Dec. 6-17 at the SM Megamall Art Walk, Bldg. A, Ortigas Center, Mandaluyong City (tel. 5709495, 7239418).

It is a comprehensive way for the public to survey the practice of these two artists.

Rubio, known for his trademark elongated necks of characters in a colonial setting, contributes works that pair an attention to detail and a respect for research.

His approach relies on representations as a device to allow audiences to imagine themselves in his paintings.

Critic Reuben Cañete says: “Through the device of mnemonic representation, Rubio’s paintings channel the imagery of his Philippine and Southeast Asian public to privilege a fantastic vision of modernist progress through the application of retrograde portraiture, distortion, the play of formal elements, and its codification into tailor-made images of the present as the past.”

Velasco is renowned for her female figures in a garden setting. Her approach is to present these images of garden scenes and merge them with her female figures.

Her canvases are awash with the green and yellow hues of a lush garden, while her female figures are stunning in form.

Rubio and Velasco majored in Fine Arts at the University of Santo Tomas.—CONTRIBUTED
