Biopic on Poveda now showing; Tiples concert on Dec. 13 | Lifestyle.INQ

OCTOBER 27, 2022

Now showing in Ayala Mall Cinemas nationwide is “Poveda,” the inspiring true story of Saint Pedro Poveda Castroverde, a martyr of the Christian persecutions in Spain.

The movie was awarded best picture, best actor (Raul Escudero) and best director (Pablo Moreno) at the recent Buenos Aires Non Stop Arte Festival.

“Poveda” also received best picture in the International Catholic Film Festival Mirabile Dictu. It also received Outstanding International Award of Excellence in the International Film Festival for Peace, Inspiration, and Equality in Jakarta.

Father  Poveda  (Linares, 1874 -Madrid, 1936), began his priestly work in the caves of Guadix (Granada) in 1901, a poor community. There he saw the problem of lack of education and builds a school for the gypsies. This unleashed  both acclaim and suspicion and envy especially among the well-educated sectors of society and the clergy.

Poveda founded the Teresian Association, after St. Teresa of Avila, the first woman doctor (or teacher) of the Church,  to foster the education of the poor, especially of marginalized women.

He was martyred during the Christian persecutions in Spain in the 1930s by the secularist and liberal Republican government, backed by the Russian communists.  The persecutions triggered the Spanish civil war in which the Republicans and communists were defeated by Generalisimo Franco and nationalist forces.

“I am a priest of Christ,” he readily told the paramilitia that came to seize and kill him.
