Super Game Guide: Fantastic game consoles and where to find them

t1218super-gamer gift (2)aWhat will it be: the NES Classic, the Famicom Mini or something else entirely? While out hunting for the console of your choice, keep the following in mind:

As of this writing, both consoles are available in limited quantities at stores like Datablitz, Toys “R” Us, Toy Kingdom and Rustan’s, but it’s better to call the branches first to check.

Note that the new stock costs up to P6,400 for the NES and P7,600 for the Famicom (prices vary between chain brands), so if you’re bent on getting one for yourself, prepare to shell out twice to thrice the original retail price for your trip down 8-bit memory lane.

Make sure not to confuse the Famicom Mini with the FC Pocket handheld or the original cartridge-driven Family Computer console of old, which has recently been popping up at bazaars and in Divisoria for around P2,000 or less. We know some people who have gotten those instead, and we can’t blame them—they work as well as any!

So you went and got yourself the single-controller NES Classic for some much-needed me time. In case you start craving company (or competition) later on and you don’t have Wii controllers lying around, you can call the stores to reserve a NES controller unit, which should retail here for around P650, or preorder wireless third-party controllers online.

Not a fan of retro gaming? For Japanese role-playing game enthusiasts with cash to spare, the sleek, slim PlayStation 4 Final Fantasy XV (FFXV) Luna Edition is available at around P21,000-P23,000, which comes bundled with the game, a Blu-ray copy of the “Kingsglaive” movie, a matching FFXV controller, and a whopping 1TB of storage, among other things.

Those who already have a PS4 can get a copy of the FFXV game in several bundles: the Day One Edition, which includes a copy of the game plus bonus content, or the Deluxe Edition, which is essentially Day One Edition plus a steelbook case and the “Kingsglaive” movie. If you’re a hard-core FF fan, try searching for the holy grail of all bundles: the Ultimate Collector’s Edition, which is Deluxe Edition plus all “FFXV: Brotherhood” animé episodes, a Noctis action figure, an art book, and original soundtracks from the animé and film.
