When changing your haircut or color, what do you consider?

I like to try anything at least once to see if it suits me. I’ve done short hair, long hair, extensions, rebonding, perms, a red shade, a purple shade, different browns and the most drastic of all, platinum blonde.

When I was invited by Laurent Herbert to get my hair done, I agreed immediately. He is the manager and senior stylist of Le Maquillage, and known for his expertise in coloring and his unusual style of hair cutting.

Long process

The haircut and color were a pretty long process that took about three hours. He gave me shoulder-length hair, layered in a way that gave it more volume than it actually had.

Laurent used only one shade of hair color, Majirel French Brown by L’Oreal, but what sets him apart from other colorists is that he applies it using a process that makes it look more natural.

After the haircut, he put my hair in a ponytail and bleached the tips to achieve the look he wanted. After a few minutes, he applied the hair color mid-length and left it on for 10 minutes. Following this, the color was applied to my roots and left for 15 minutes. Lastly, color was applied to emulsify the ends for another five minutes.

The reason behind this process was that different parts of the hair take different lengths of time to achieve the same color. This means that if the color was applied all at one time, some parts would turn out lighter than the others.

The result was a natural-looking brown that gave character to my otherwise flat hair. What I love most is that the cut allows me to create different looks, depending on how I style it.

What I learned from all the different hair styles I’ve tried is that there’s nothing wrong with experimenting with different looks, as long as hair is well maintained. At the end of the day, healthy hair looks good on anyone! —CONTRIBUTED
