Stay well as you age

As we go on living our everyday lives, the passage of time takes its toll on our bodies.

Undoubtedly, the wear and tear caused by the  stresses of life will manifest in the form of sudden aches and pains.

Help, please.  I am only 45 years old.  Why do I have  dry eyes?

The bad news is, even 8-year-olds have been known to experience this passing health concern.

Dry eyes are a common condition.  It is a lack of moisture and lubrication on the surface of the eyes, which could be linked to disorders of the immune system such as Sjogren’s Syndrome, lupus and rheumatoid arthritis.

Common causes are  aging, diabetes, thyroid problems  and vitamin A deficiency.

Risk factors are  inflammation and abrasion of the eyes.

Women are more likely to develop this condition due to menopause and hormonal changes.

If you are experiencing dryness of the eye, then it is wise for you to see your doctor immediately.

Immediate tips to alleviate symptoms:  blink more often, use eye drops, increase humidity in your room, put bowls of water in your surroundings, splash cold water on your eyes to flush out any bacteria. Afterwards, place a warm washcloth on your eyelids for three minutes.

Long-term use of contact lenses can lead to dry eyes, as can high altitude, very dry air as in an airplane, smoke, wind, sun, reading, driving, HIV and Bell’s Palsy.

What is the secret to beautiful skin?

There are no secrets.  The answers are genetics and lifestyle.
To do:
1. Be kind to your skin.  Avoid any harsh cleansers, which can come in the form of gels, milks, foam, soaps.  Choose one with a balanced pH.  The label will say it. This means junking strong toners that are alcohol-based.
2. Hydrate.  Drink copious amounts of water.  You cannot dehydrate your body.  Remember, other beverages such as coffee, tea, juices, etc. are not equivalent to water.
3. Eat healthy.  Add more leafy greens and vitamin C- rich fruits to your diet, such as citrus and berries.
4. Never go to bed with makeup on.   Always have a well-cleansed face before going to bed.
5. Don’t rub or pull on your skin.  All that tugging can cause unnecessary wrinkles and sagging.
6. Wear sunscreen every day.  Protect your skin no matter what.  Rain or shine, applying sunscreen should be part of your daily ritual.
7. Avoid harsh sunlight.  Try to stay indoors during the hottest hours of the day, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
8. Clean your makeup brushes and sponges weekly with soap and water.
9. Get enough sleep at night.  Try to sleep 7-8 hours every night.  It is the best way to maintain a youthful complexion.
10.   Supplement your diet with vitamins A, C, E and zinc.

How can I stay in shape?

Whatever your age, keeping fit is vital to good health.  If you start now, then your routine will carry you through to your advanced years.

Avoid or reduce sugar.  This, because a high sugar diet depresses the immune system.

Walk 10,000 steps a day even without visiting the gym.  Brisk walk 15-20 minutes daily for heart health.

Balance work with play.  You need your rest.

Manage the stressors in your life.

Eat heart-friendly foods, lean meats, vegetables and low sugar fruits.

Supplement with omega-3, L-argine, COQ10, garlic oil, vitamin C.
