Timeless Tod’s yields surprises

When Tod’s was left without a creative director last year following the departure of Alessandra Facchinetti, whose final collection was for Fall 2016, the storied Italian luxury leather goods firm resolved to focus on “timeless icons” as the theme of its Spring-Summer 2017 collection.

Designed by a team, it centered on classic wardrobe pieces that remain unaffected by changing trends, made out of Tod’s precious leather, in python, nappa, suede-biker jackets, peacoats, micro skirts, shorts and vests.

Fresh incarnations

For the bags and shoes, Tod’s stayed true to the theme by, once again, churning out fresh incarnations of its well-loved recent styles, like the Double T and Wave bags, including micro versions (10” x 7”) of the latter and a roller luggage that’s available to order. The Double T bag comes in crossbody styles as well as shopper shapes.

A new purse for the season is the Tod’s Twist, a boxy, top-handle bowler style with double magnetic closures, and comes with tassel and cube charms. The bottom sports the iconic Tod’s pebbles.

The new bags are generally of more utilitarian sizes, compared to previous seasons. But those who love their bags small need not fret: there’s a fully pebbled bowler style, the Bauletto, in micro and mini sizes, that is as practical as it is fetching. The roomy bowler bag has twin top handles and a removable shoulder strap. It comes in various colors.

For women’s shoes, look out for the sneakers with woven raffia sole detailing, or the strappy sandals that are a nod to saddler traditions. The sleek Double T loafers are also a standout, as well as some trendy fold-back loafers sporting the Gommino pebbles (available to order).

Strong market

The men’s key pieces include some hand-treated leathers, inspired by the brushwork of artist Mark Rothko. There are also bags and shoes under the Pash collection, consisting of leather pieces hand-coated with paint to achieve a dappled, aged effect.

In the Philippines, Tod’s has a strong market for men’s shoes, and the brand’s patrons here won’t be disappointed with the new selection of Gommino sneakers, driving shoes and dressier styles.

Men’s bag is the Envelope, a roomy, zipper-less style with a pebbled bottom, designed for travel. At the collection preview in Greenbelt 4, Stores Specialists Inc. also showed two versions of the 24H holdall bags; they were so big they could fit a small person.

Oh, and speaking of timeless icons, Tod’s will roll out a book of the same title next month, featuring personalities who embody the house’s brand of unremitting modernity. Think Brigitte Bardot, Twiggy, Lauren Hutton, Bianca Jagger, among others, including six Asians.

The first drop of Tod’s Spring-Summer 2017 collection is now available at Greenbelt 4 and Rustan’s Shangri-La.
