Some of the biggest names in Manila’s jazz circuit will perform at Arya Plaza in Bonifacio Global City this month dubbed “Arya Rhythms.” The series of gigs is part of the Philippine International Jazz and Arts Festival 2017.
Henry Katindig, a figurehead in the local jazz scene for the past three decades opened the festival two days ago. Katindig shared the stage with composer, and musical director Colby Calzada, and drummer and cofounder of the Philippine International Jazz and Arts Festival Jun Viray.
On Feb. 14, the Fil-French Duo Harmonique, Margarita and Thibault Momper, will play classical guitar tunes. Margarita started playing guitar at the age of 15. She is one of the founders of the Triple Fret guitar ensemble. Thibault started playing at 7, and completed his degrees in Classical Guitar and Music Theory at the Music Conservatory of Nancy.
Rey Infante, Johnny Gaerlan and Jay Cummings perform on Feb. 17. Infante, whose strings inspiration come from Joe Pass and George Benson, has performed on international stages from Japan, Indonesia, China, Thailand to Dubai. Bassist Gaerlan is back in Manila, after 30 years in Singapore, and American drummer Cummings was formerly with Stan Kenton’s band.
On Feb. 24, the Royal Hartigan Trio will explore the world’s greatest traditions through the prism of live jazz performance. The ensemble members have lived, played and toured throughout Africa, the Middle East, Europe, the Americas and Asia, including four tours of China as featured ensemble at the renowned Beijing Midi Jazz Festival.
Arya Plaza is a destination dining haven along McKinley Parkway hosting restaurants such as Foundry by Smith Butcher, Fukudaya, Arroz Ecija and Basil.
