Catanduanes music fest ends with guitar spectacular and José Rizal lecture

The yearly treat of live classical music in Catanduanes ends with two special concerts featuring classical guitarists Aaron Aguila III and Sting Asistores on May 12, and soprano Stefanie Quintin with classical guitarist Anton Luis Avila on June 16, 6 p.m., at Catanduanes State University (CSU) Auditorium.

Aguila is First Prize winner of the 2016 National Music Competition for Young Artists and gold medalist in the Jakarta Asean International Guitar Competition. Asistores is winner of Young Masters Competition and recipient of the Special Prize in the Bangkok International Guitar Competition and Festival.

The closing concert will also feature former Tourism Secretary and 1964 Miss International Gemma Cruz Araneta, who will deliver a special lecture on the national hero, Dr. José Rizal, on June 16, 3 p.m., at CSU Auditorium.

Sting Asistores

The lecture is in time for the celebration of the 156th birthday of the national hero.

Araneta is the grandniece of Rizal. Her paternal great-grandmother was Maria Mercado, sister of the national hero. Her latest book is “Rizal’s True Love” launched last year.

The May 12 program is as follows: Sonata BWV 100 by Johann Sebastian Bach; Variations on a Theme by Mozart by Fernando Sor; La Catedral by Agustin Barrios Mangore; “Usher Waltz” by Nikita Koshkin; Fuge, Allegro BWV 988 by Bach; Sonata by Turina; “Invierno Porteno” by Piazzolla; “Recuerdos” by Tarrega; “Danza del Molinero” by De Falla; and “Bayan Ko” by Constancio de Guzman. —CONTRIBUTED
